Food enters the trachea instead of the esophagus, and smaller food particles pass deep into the lungs. The other two images (right) compare the normal oxygenation process in the lungs with oxygenation obstructed by inflammation, fluid buildup, and a thickening of the alveolar membrane (aspiration pneumonia).
