The first two illustrations show the post-accident condition in a sagittal view of the lumbar spine; the injuries include a bulging L3-4 disc, a herniated L4-5 disc impinging on a nerve root and a slight bulge of the L5-S1 disc. The third illustration shows the first step in the procedure, including the placement of the patient on her side and preparation for the procedure. The fourth illustration shows the pre-operative condition, including a herniated disc impinging on a right nerve root. The fifth illustration shows the insertion of a needle into the disc. The sixth illustration shows the removal of approximately 30% of the disc using a nucleotome.
