L5-S1 Lumbar Disc Herniation with Surgery

This stock medical exhibit depicts an L5-S1 lumbar disc herniation with surgery in a series of illustrations. The first two illustrations show the pre-operative condition in a sagittal view of the lumbo-sacral spine. The enlargement depicts L5-S1 disc herniation with effacement of the right S1 nerve root. The third illustration depicts the same pre-operative condition in a superior view of the L5-S1 disc. The fourth illustration shows the first step of the L5-S1 lumbar microlaminotomy, discectomy and foraminotomy surgery. It shows a posterior view of the incision site in which an incision is made into the lower back over the L5-S1 spinous processes. The fifth illustration shows a drill making an opening through the bone at the L5-S1 level on the right side. The sixth illustration shows the removal of the herniated disc material and the decompression of the right nerve root.
