Left Radical Nephrectomy with Resulting Aortic Occlusion

ID: exh75166b
This stock medical exhibit begins with an abbreviated view of a left radical nephrectomy procedure. An anterior figure and a large inset shows the exposure of the left kidney through a subcostal incision. Also, a second inset shows the removal of the kidney and the placement of sutures to attempt to tie off the renal vessels.rnrnNext, one large anterior cut-way view of the retroperitoneal region of this patient is included to illustrate the pre-operative condition, as a result of the nephrectomy but prior to an additional procedure performed to repair the aorta. This image clearly demonstrates that the left kidney has been removed in the previous procedure, but it's also clear that the aorta has been caught up in multiple loops of suture causing a complete occlusion of this vessel above the level of the right renal artery.
